THE WORLD'S MOST AMAZING JOURNEY MADE BY ERNEST SHACKLETON

EL VIAJE MAS ASOMBROSO DEL MUNDO
HECHO POR ERNEST SHACKLETON

"Se buscan  para un  peligroso. Sueldo bajo. Mucho . No se asegura retorno con vida. Honor y reconocimiento en caso de éxito. Ernest Shackleton "

Ernest Shackleton was very clear that his was the sea. Ignoring the aspirations of his father that he wanted to follow him in the ways of medicine. At 16 he left London, where he lived, and embarked on a ship that left the port of Liverpool. Four months weathering the storms of Cape Horn not only did not give up, but that marked his vocation, and the inhospitable south was a strange feeling he would remember years later. He seemed to give up the adventure to change a woman's love, and was used in another shipping line to travel between England and South Africa (just two months' journey) ... But then he heard that Scott was preparing an expedition to Antarctica. He managed, by contact, be enlisted in the expedition although very ill, was forced by the expedition leader to return the first winter. Shackleton would not recover from the blow, and would resent Scott for the rest of his life.

In a few years he married his girlfriend Emily, and even made an attempt to enter politics (he was a man of great character and a great speaker), but that did not work. After not being chosen by the Unionist calved, went to the Royal Geographic Society to request funds. I wanted to organize, in just six months a new Antarctic expedition.

He raised funds, and a ship, the Nimrod, that after expensive repairs or could get rid of the smell of seal oil, traffic to which he had devoted his best years in Newfoundland. It also acquired a detachable cabin, wood and cork for insulation, ponies to pull sleds, a motor vehicle and of course crew.

The Nimrod match New Zealand in 1908 with the approval of the kings of England. I get to almost reach the Antarctic winter, whose long months were severely tested by the coexistence of the crew, a somewhat violent, and willing to become involved Shackleton shot if the situation became uncontrolled. Finally, in the spring, calmed nerves in view of the adventure. A party of men, through terrible hardships, and would get back alive to reach the South Magnetic Pole. Others went to explore the coast from King Edward VII Land. Shackleton, with two other browsers, go to the Deep South, to complete the feat that Scott n had. Would, on the verge of exhaustion, frostbite and starvation, only 97 miles from the Pole. In turn, were saved ponies residues that had been killed, leaving as meat deposits. The expedition was fired just after the icy Antarctic, with a bittersweet feeling and a tremendous experience to back. And yet, experience with case was yet to come.

The trans-Antarctic crossing: 1914 - 1917

When Shackleton returned to England on board the Nimrod, he knew his place in the race to the South Pole was over; Amundsen or Scott would get it before he could make another attempt (as indeed happened). So devoted his mind and efforts that would be the next big challenge Antarctic: cross the frozen continent, from sea to sea, and passing through the pole. It would be a journey of 1800 miles, the first half, from the Weddell Sea to the South Pole, unexplored terrain.

The expedition would include a group that will attempt to complete the trans-Antarctic crossing, while another team is devoted to scientific research in coastal and glaciers. This would include two ships: the Endurance, which would lead to the group that would make the trip and then stay on the coast, and Aurora, for support. The announcement of the issue was made public in January 1914. The famous newspaper ad answered almost five thousand adventurers, of which 56 were selected. Was about to begin one of the feats of exploration and adventure most incredible of all time.

However, in Europe, a fact that would divert attention, for obvious reasons: I was about to declare the Great War, the First World War. The news of the mobilization bequeathed just as the ship was ready to leave. Shackleton sent a telegram to the King and Winston Churchill giving his ship and his crew to become a destroyer. However, the prime minister declined his offer.

The Endurance finished provisioned in Argentina and headed for South Georgia. However, the whalers in the area warned that the ice was growing rapidly this season. Shackleton began to fear that his journey would not be the first summer. By the way, in South Georgia mustered all the coal and warm clothing he could find, and launched into a sea ice ever, hoping to find a safe harbor in the Weddell Sea. In January could barely move. To release the tension, the expedition jumped ship to the ice to play soccer on ice, until the ship's captain stepped in the wrong place, collapsed, and had to be rescued. Another problem was the orcas, seals mistook them, and practiced their hunting system consisting dive into the deep to pick up momentum and then crashed into the ice and through, with jaws ready to seize whatever. Almost prey on the photographer. For its part, the Endurance was trapped by ice definitely Jan. 19. The sun set on February 17. The ship had just become winter quarters (and renamed "The Ritz"), while the currents pushed the ice masses westward bound uncertain.
